Australia’s Bernard Tomic plays a backhand during his match against Frenchman Julien Benneteau during day two of the Brisbane International at Pat Rafter Arena yesterday . . . Tomic won, 6-2 4-6 7-5.BRISBANE – Bernard Tomic’s growing maturity was on show for all to see yesterday as he won the war in his head before finally breaking his duck at his “home” tournament.
It took almost 2 1/2 hours, and six match points, for Tomic but he demonstrated why, this year, he’s seeded at the Brisbane International by toppling French world No.52 Julien Benneteau 6-2 4-6 7-5.
While it all started so smoothly for the 19-year-old who raced to a 5-0 lead at Pat Rafter Arena, a second-set failure rattled Australia’s highest-ranked man.
Tomic was down a break in the deciding set and, try as he might, couldn’t help but get frustrated by two similar topsy-turvy losses to Benneteau last year.
“Today that was in my head a little bit, especially when he won that second set and I was happy to come back from that 3-2 break down and push him for that 7-5 win,” Tomic said.
“To get back from a situation like that is good.
“It’s all experience and now that I’m a bit more experienced I know what to do in situations like this in three-setters.”
Tomic admits he’s a big talker on the court, and still gets down on himself when things go against him.
He failed to convert five match points and was relieved when Benneteau handed him victory with a double-fault but the Brisbane breakthrough was an important step forward.
Since his first attempt in 2009, the three-time wildcard had never made it past the first round.
