Jarmila GajdosovaPERTH – World No. 33 Jarmila Gajdosova kicked off 2012 in fighting fashion, defeating Spain’s Anabel Medina Garrigues in three sets in Australia’s opening Hopman Cup tennis tie in Perth.
Gajdosova overcame a second-set blip to grind past Medina Garrigues 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in 121 minutes, giving Australia a 1-0 lead ahead of Lleyton Hewitt’s clash with world No. 24 Fernando Verdasco.
Everything seemed to be going swimmingly for Gajdosova after she took the first set in 39 minutes.
But world No. 27 Medina Garrigues found her groove in the second set, matching the Australian’s power game to send the contest into a decider.
Gajdosova regained her composure from that point on, snaring an early break before winning on her second match point with a deft backhand volley.
“I was really nervous,” Gajdosova said.
“It’s my first match so it took a bit longer to get into a rhythm.”
