Vera and Craig Boehme, of Shortland. Picture by Dean OslandBIG John Young reckons a prayer from the Salvation Army’s Howard Mole kept the rain away until the Bikers For Kids finished their 34th Toy Run yesterday.
More than 5000 bikes stretched in a line from Stockton to Newcastle Foreshore to raise money and donate toys and tinned food to disadvantaged Hunter families for Christmas.

Big John said the number of toys delivered would have exceeded the 25,000 donated last year but the cash might not match last year’s $45,000.
‘‘It was one of the most amazing sights you could see,’’ he said.
‘‘As we were pulling into Frog Pond at the foreshore you could still see the bikes leaving at Stockton.’’
The Toy Run started with about 20 motorbike riders.
‘‘The Salvation Army look after about 500 families for Christmas with the donation that we provide with great help from the community,’’ Big John said.
