It was known as Queensland Rail and was owned and operated by the state government until it was floated.

Mr Tinkler’s Hunter Sports Group owns the Newcastle Knights NRL team and the Newcastle Jets A-League side. The Knights team contains former NSW State of Origin skipper Kurt Gidley and six others who have worn a sky-blue jumper.

Returning hooker Danny Buderus is also an ex-NSW captain and his 2012 Knights teammates Timana Tahu, James McManus, Aku Uate, Kade Snowden and Jarrod Mullen have all represented their state against Queensland.

The Knights can proudly display their QR National sponsorship playing against Brisbane, North Queensland and Gold Coast. Likewise the Jets can show off their Queensland support against Brisbane Roar and Gold Coast United in the A-League.
